Legal Profile of Montessori Academy

Montessori Academy, Inc. is a Tennessee not-for-profit corporation per IRS code 501(C)3.  The effective date of the incorporation was 9/1/1989.  Montessori Academy Inc. is a family-run, board-operated Montessori school educating children from infants (3 months) through eighth grade.  The school has its roots from Montessori Centre, founded in 1967.

As a 501(C)3 corporation in Tennessee and based on its charter, there is no private ownership of the school per se.  The nonprofit board of directors is made of six (6) active members.  The board is self-perpetuating, as members step down; new members are voted in as replacements.  Four of the active board members are “family” members, three of whom work administratively in the school.   A current parent and a parent of previously enrolled children hold the other two active board positions, one of whom had children enrolled in the school for over twenty years.  Over the years, there have also been teachers and parents on the board.

The board functions to oversee the financial viability of the school as well as the strategic path upon which it travels.  The board is very careful not to try to manage the day-to-day administrative functions of the school as that is the prevue of the head of school and the administrative staff.  The board is involved in major financial issues if they arise, approves the annual review of tuition levels, and sets governance policy.  The board also oversees the head-of-school.

We celebrate our multi-cultural and multi-national community each year in the Annual International Festival when we invite parents and grandparents to participate in a day of sharing their culture.  All students are encouraged to visit booths set up with displays of indigenous art, crafts, skills, traditional apparel, and food. Performances by different ethnic groups feature dance and music.

Community Interest

The Montessori Academy is a multi-culturally diverse community.  Walking through the classrooms is the best way to experience our multi-cultural, multi-racial community of students and teachers.  We have students and teachers who are African American, Middle Eastern (Indian & Arabic), Hispanic/Latino, Pacific Islander, African (not American), and Caucasian. Religious backgrounds include Christian, Jew, Hindu, Muslim, and others.
